A Designer column freezer is one tall door behind a custom panel, made in 18-, 24-, 30- and 36-inch widths, and each current model carries an ice maker. At its 0°F setting, room air that slips past the door leaves frost right at the seal. One door, one compartment, one panel
The column freezer is the all-freezer member of the Designer line: a full-height cabinet with a single door, set into the run and faced with the cabinetmaker’s panel. Food sits in baskets that run out on slides, and the ice container lifts out once its basket is pulled to the stop. Among the current Designer refrigerator and freezer columns, only the freezer is made 18 inches wide.
Set beside a column refrigerator, it needs Sub-Zero’s dual installation kit or, without one, a filler strip at least 2 inches wide between the two.
Why a freezer door gives itself away
We measure the door before anything behind the grille, and on a freezer the reason is simple. Damp room air that gets past the gasket meets surfaces far below freezing and drops its water as frost where it came in. The leak draws its own map.
Sub-Zero’s troubleshooting for frost or ice inside a Designer unit reads the same way. After a clean condenser it lists three door items: closing properly, not left ajar, a gasket without rips or tears. Defrost faults are real, but we test for them once the door has passed.
What the door is asked to carry
The panel limits match the column refrigerators: 45 lb at 18 inches, 60 lb at 24, and 75 lb at 30 and 36, never thinner than 5/8 inch. The hinges stop the door at 105 degrees. Clips packed with the unit bring that down to 90, and the Designer guide notes that with the swing limited, the top basket must come out before the middle or lower one.
A visit, in order
- Model and serial from the rating plate, inside the middle drawer or basket by its guide, on the side away from the hinge.
- The door: a paper strip at the corners and down both sides, and the shape of any frost.
- Level, read on the cabinet against the floor, then the panel against its limit, then the hinge.
- Temperatures, the condenser behind the kickplate, and the defrost system last.
Whatever the fault turns out to be, it is priced before the repair begins.

Questions owners ask
Does every Designer column freezer come with an ice maker?
Every current one does. The model numbers end in FI, and Sub-Zero's model key reads F as all freezer and I as ice maker; the earlier IC columns carry the same letters. Sub-Zero Appliance Repair Bellevue takes the full number from the rating plate before booking. Call (425) 696-2636 with it.
Why does frost keep coming back just inside the freezer door?
Because the leak is still there. A torn or folded gasket, a basket that stops the door short, or a cabinet out of level each leaves a gap at the seal, and the damp in that air freezes where it enters. Scraping the frost away without closing the gap only starts the build-up again.
