Freezer Door No Longer Pulls Itself Shut

What changes when it stops closing

The door rests open a crack instead of meeting the frame. If the door alarm is switched on, it sounds. Before long, frost grows inside, thickest where the air gets in.

The Sub-Zero documents we work from describe no closing spring on this door, so we look at what makes any hinged door settle shut or stall: the angle the cabinet stands at, the weight on the hinge, and anything in the way.

Level comes first

Sub-Zero’s installation guide asks for the unit to be levelled to the floor, not to the cabinetry, and warns that getting it wrong can affect door closing. Floors change: new hardwood, relaid tile, a unit rolled out for cleaning and pushed back. A small change at one leg alters how the door swings.

Weight, and what is in the way

The panel limit is 45 lb on the 18-inch freezer, 60 lb on the 24-inch and 75 lb on the 30 and 36. A heavier panel, or a door used as a handhold, lets the handle side sink, so the door meets the frame at an angle. A basket not pushed back onto its slides, a box standing proud or a gasket folded under at a corner can hold it open too, and those we find by eye first.

What it rules out

A door that closes and seals once the cabinet is level rules out the hinge. One that still stops short with the unit level and the panel inside its limit points at the hinge itself, and that repair is priced before the work.
