Why a good seal pushes back

Opening the door lets kitchen air replace some of the cold air inside. Once the door shuts, that air chills and contracts, and the pressure inside drops below the room’s. The gasket holds, so the room presses the door shut until a little air seeps back. A tall column door gives that small difference a large face to act on, which is why it is easy to feel here.

In an owner’s guide for an earlier generation of its built-ins, Sub-Zero calls this a vacuum seal and says to wait several seconds for the pressure to equalise. Nothing needs adjusting when that is all it is.

When the seal is not the reason

• The door stays hard to open however long it has been shut.
• One edge grips while the rest lets go, which points to ice on the gasket along that edge.
• The panel scrapes its neighbour on the way out. Sub-Zero calls a 1/8-inch reveal typical, and a gap that has closed turns the next door into a brake.
• The gasket comes away tacky or starts to tear at a corner.

Each one means harder pulls, and those load the hinge and the panel fixings.

What we check, and what it rules out

Shut, pull, wait, pull again. Then the paper strip round the frame, a look for frost at the seal, and the reveals either side of the panel. A door that frees itself after a pause, seals evenly and clears its neighbours has no fault to fix. One that does not sends us to the gasket, the cabinet’s level or the panel’s position on its brackets.
