Wood Panel Warped Where Frost Has Been Forming

How the damp reaches the wood

A seal that leaks lets freezer air chill the frame and the panel edge beside it. Kitchen air meeting that cold edge leaves water on it, and inside the door the same leak builds frost along the gasket.

Wood follows the air around it. The USDA Forest Products Laboratory’s Wood Handbook puts it plainly: a finish changes how fast wood takes up and gives off moisture, not where its moisture content ends up. Wood that swells more on one face or edge than another cups and warps. A panel wetted along one side day after day does exactly that.

Why every face is finished

Sub-Zero asks for custom panels to be finished on all sides, and gives the practical reason: the back and edges are on show whenever the door is open. There is a second reason in the wood itself. A face left bare takes up water faster than a sealed one, and that difference is what bends a board. The Handbook says as much about siding primed on its back: it is less likely to cup.

The order of work

1. The leak, found and repaired: gasket, level or hinge, whichever the strip test and the frost pattern point to.
2. The panel, judged and made by a cabinetmaker. Making and refinishing panels is their trade, not ours.
3. The weight of the replacement, checked against Sub-Zero’s limit for the column width, and its thickness against the 5/8-inch minimum. A heavier board than the first can undo the hinge.
4. The panel on its brackets. It moves side to side at the mounting screws and up, down, in and out on cams, so we set it to the reveals either side.

A panel replaced before step one gets ordered twice.
