Tall-Unit Door Drooping at the Handle Side

A 700 tall door that sits low at the handle side has done one of two things: the panel has slipped on its brackets, or the door has sagged on its hinges. Door or panel

Two faults look alike from across the kitchen. The 700 door panel hooks onto a tabbed bracket on the handle side and is screwed through a bracket on the hinge side, with a quarter inch of travel up, down and sideways for alignment. If those screws slacken, the panel slides down on a door that is still true. If the hinges have worn, the whole door drops and carries the panel with it.

The seal separates them. A panel that has slipped leaves the gasket gripping evenly, because the door behind it has not moved. A door that has dropped grips unevenly, and somewhere on the handle side the paper strip comes out with little resistance.

What pulls a tall door down

  • Panel weight. Sub-Zero’s limit for a tall door panel is 40 lb on the 27-inch cabinets and 53 lb on the 36-inch ones. Solid slabs, inlays and heavy pulls all count toward it.
  • Load at the handle side. A door leant on while reaching in, or door shelves stacked with bottles, puts force on the free edge every day.
  • Level. The installation guide levels the cabinet to the floor and links a unit off level to trouble with door closing.

The 36-inch cabinets carry a sturdier hinge than the 27-inch ones, and their panel limit still stops at 53 lb.

What it rules out

A dropped door leaves a stretch of seal that no longer grips, and the cabinet answers with frost, sweating or long running. Those go once the door is square again, so the door is set before any cooling part is tested. Where the panel is over its limit, the cabinetmaker lightens or remakes it first; a new hinge under the old load follows the old one down.
